Matt Le Tissier has revealed that he is to participate on Countdown after successfully passing his contestant audition for the Channel4 daytime quiz show.

We’re not talking about some kind of celebrity version of the show here either. Le Tiss is having a crack at the real, honest-to-goodness Countdown – the one where you actually need to be good with numbers and words and junk and stuff.

Le Tissier has previously made an appearance in ‘Dictionary Corner’ in 2009, but becomes only the fourth professional footballer to make it on as an actual contestant.

The other three? Clarke Carlisle, ex-Norwich striker Adrian Coote* and Notts County midfielder Neil MacKenzie, who proved to be the most successful – winning five games in a row before bowing out at the quarter-final stage in 2008.

Here’s a stunning extract from Coote’s Wiki entry: “Coote got the ‘Haircut of the Month’ award in the popular football magazine Shoot in February 1997, his wet look gelled curtains were the must have haircut of every young boy.”

Not hard to see why…
