Steve McClaren has dropped David Beckham from his first England squad. OK, Stevie Mac, we get the picture – you’re your own man. But is this decision a message to the national press (the message being, ‘I’ve stepped out of Sven’s shadow at last…’) or a genuine decision based on McClaren’s belief that Beckham can no longer cut it at international level? I’ve a horrible feeling it’s the former, which would be a shame if it’s the case, as I still think Beckham can offer the England team a lot as a squad player.

Would you have dropped him too?

Yes I would have dropped him! Aside from free kicks he is rubbish. He has no pace and no defensive ability. Teams can no longer afford to carry a player through a match just to take free kicks and corners, Beckham doesn’t offer much else. Whenever Aaron Lennon was introduced in the WC England got a whole other dimension to their attack. If Sven hadn’t been an ass and left Defoe at home the English public might be laughing about all this right now as they download pics of England lifting the World Cup.

Yep. He did exactly nothing at the World Cup (technicolor yawn excepted), a sign of complacency rather than being past it. I hope this jolts him into pulling his socks up.

I would have left him in the squad but dropped from the first team. That might have been enough of a message to him to get back to how he played a couple of years ago, when he was playing like a man possessed.

About bloody time! Well done Steve,
I hear people saying he Maclaren should let him make it to 100 caps, what a joke, maybe Lineker should be named as sub and brouhgt on to take penalties so he can break the England goalscoring record, sorry Becham fans but it’s for the good of the team.
So what if he scored a goal against Equador with 1 freekick from 20, maybe we woud have won by more with someone else in his place.
Welcome back to El Tel too.

Maybe you should get your stats right before you type. England scored 6 goals at the world cup – Beckham scored 2 assisted 1, even Joe Cole’s fantastic goal against Sweden was from a clearence made by a Beckham cross. In the Trinidad & Tabago match Beckham supplied two fantastic crosses that would have been put away any other player than Ouch !Crouch. To drop Beckham was first tatical mistake of many by Mclaren…..We know Beckham is getting on but if it’s 0-0 with 15 minutes to go – who better to come off the bench than – statistically one of the best assisting goal scorers and free kick specialist England has ever had – Mr Beckham.
