The FA Cup final is almost upon us and Portsmouth and Chelsea will soon be battling to win the world’s premier domestic cup competition. Along with the FA Cup sponsor E.ON, we think this is a great time to salute some of football’s unsung heroes, specifically goalkeepers. They may be stars of tomorrow, or just players who have given a lot back to their community. So over the next few weeks we are going to highlight some very special individuals.

Today’s hero plays in an Under 8s league and has been winning rave notices and the odd man of the match award, for his fearlessness, bravery and commitment to getting the ball before the opposition strikers. His name is Matthew, he plays for Farsley Celtic in the north west of England and his dream is to follow in the footsteps of his hero, Paul Rachubka, and be the goalkeeper for his beloved Blackpool FC. On his ‘Life Between the Sticks’ portrait, Matthew said: “I live, breathe and sleep goalkeeping – I love it. Having my photo taken was a bit nerve-wracking to start with but seeing the finished thing is amazing. I can’t believe I’ll be hanging next to all those famous goalkeepers – I can’t wait to tell my mates; it’s so exciting.”

You can find more unsung heroes on E.ON’s Great Saves site by clicking here. There’s lots of really cool stuff including competitions and information about the Life between the Sticks exhibition at the Getty Images Gallery in London.”
