Veteran Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Claude Makelele has turned down the chance to make a shock return to the French national side after rejecting an approach from current coach, Raymond Domenech.

The 37-year-old anchor man retired from international football after France’s disastrous outing at the 2008 European Championships (and has since announced his intention to retire from football altogether this coming summer) but, according to a report in Le Parisien, Domenech met with Makelele in Paris last week with the intention of coercing the former Chelsea man into one final swansong for Les Bleus following some impressive performances for PSG at the tail end of the Ligue 1 season.

However, Makelele stuck to his guns and turned down the call-up, as he intends to travel to South Africa as a pundit for both the BBC and for French broadcasters Canal Plus.
