As his post-World Cup dip continues, Kieran Trippier scored a horrendous own-goal as Tottenham suffered a damaging 2-0 away defeat at the hands of Chelsea on Wednesday.

Spurs were hoping to bounce back from their shock defeat to Burnley at the weekend, but the north Londoners came up against a Blues side themselves eager to put their EFL Cup final defeat to Man City behind them.

Maurizio Sarri dropped Kepa from the starting line-up after his Wembley am-dram, but replacement Willy Caballero was given little to do by the visitors.

Both sides hit the frame of the goal in the first-half, with Gonzalo Higuain hitting the post before Harry Winks saw his dipping effort come back off the crossbar.

The opening goal came after the break, with Pedro turning Toby Alderweireld in the box before firing through the legs of Hugo Lloris.

Any chance Spurs had of getting back into the game were then extinguished when a mix-up between Trippier and Lloris saw the England full-back deftly slot the ball past the French goalkeeper and into his own net.

While Trippier deserves a hefty portion of the blame, you have to question – once again – just what Lloris thought he could accomplish by blindly sprinting out of his goal at the first sense of danger…

Lloris does it all the time, and it rarely ends in anything but abject embarrassment. Why is nobody at least trying to coach this ridiculous compulsion out of him?

The game would eventually end in a 2-0 win for the Blues, a result which is sure to offer Sarri at least a minor boost after a difficult week.

As for Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham, they now find themselves eight points behind second-place City and nine behind Liverpool at the top, with their title hopes surely over now for another season.

In a word, it’s all gone a bit Spursy.

Same old Tottenham, playstaion team. Never a real threat.

Nope, sorry, don’t agree. Trippier’s fault all the way.
As the ball passed him, his hand and arms are clearly in an ‘open’ gesture, signalling to Lloris, “Come and get it, mate. I’ll shield it.” But then, when he hears the thundering bootsteps of the onrushing Chelsea player and realises he can’t actually shield it with any confidence, he knocks it sideways. Except not quite enough sideways to miss the goal. Instead of what would have been an embarrassing corner he plants it in right inside the edge of the goal. If that had been a forward you’d say he judged it perfectly.
And then he couldn’t even find the decency to apologise to Lloris.
