76450247.jpgIt’s been a long time coming but Michael Owen rediscovered his shooting skills with his first league goal for two years as Newcastle beat Wigan at the weekend.
Although he missed at least four chances before claiming the late winner, the fact he eventually found the net is good news for England’s approaching Euro qualifiers against Israel and Russia.
Owen is a shoe-in to start the decisive games, but with injuries and suspensions restricting our supporting strike force – who should partner him up front?

Peter Crouch is suspended for the first game but a big man/small man partnership could still be on the cards courtesy of Emile Heskey’s late call up. Despite the Wigan striker’s shot shyness, he shares an impressive partnership with Owen at club and international level and apparently he’s the one that Owen would prefer by his side.
Another option would be to pair two fleet-footed but undersized strikers together by using either Jermaine Defoe or Andy Johnson. But Defoe is still trying to claim a starting position in the Spurs team and Johnson hasn’t scored yet this season.
Then there’s Alan Smith, although even he can’t be sure what position he calls his own anymore.
There’s also been talk of using a ‘Cole in the hole’ with Chelsea’s Joe Cole inventively linking the midfield, but he’s another player that hasn’t had much playing time this season.
So, who do you think is the best man for the job?

Andy from Little Britain, that way if anyone else in the England sqaud picks up an injury they can borrow the wheelchair.

    Dean Ashton

Heskey, have we taken leave of our senses ? Got to be AJ as he’s got “genuine” pass. If you want a bit more “craft” throw on Jermaine.

  5. Bleustilton says:

Owen does look a lot like Shearer in that photo.

  6. Joe says:

Anyone who can be referred to as ‘Not Emile Heskey’.
Frontrunners: Ashton, Derbyshire, Johnson, Agbonlahor, Defoe Anichebe, Chopra.

  7. Dom says:

Anichebe’s just opted to play for Nigeria, no?

  8. devil says:

Nope, he’s just refected a call up from the Nigerian Under-21s

  9. Andrew II says:

Joe Cole makes the most sense. Owen’s pace in behind stretching the defence gives Cole (one of England’s only technically gifted players) room to create.
Heskey and Smith are jokes and Defoe is too similar to Owen.

Joe Cole up front…. shit idea. hes probably been englands best midfielder and only one who has done anything on the left, why play him up front??

  11. Pete says:

Andy Johnson may not have scored but he has at least two key contributions to his name.
Heskey may have one goal this season, but lets see how many he gets come end of the season- if his awful goalscoring record needs proving again. Apart from the goal what else has he done? If he wasnt international class three years ago, then why has he been recalled without having improved? 5 goals in 43 england performances is diabolical.
Joe Cole will carry less of a goal threat than Johnson, and is needed in a thread-bare midfield, whereas Defoe has not started a single game this season, let alone scored in one.
    Point proven.

    Andy is not that good
