The surgeon who operated on Shay Given‘s torn bowel following his collision with Marlon Harewood has compared the injuries to those sustained in a car crash. The Newcastle keeper picked up the injury as he and West Ham’s Harewood slid in for a 50/50 ball in Sunday’s match.
Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said: "The surgeon said he has never seen an injury like this through football. He has seen it happen in car crashes where there has been impact – I suppose that is what has caused it this time." Given is expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks following the surgery.
