GivenThe surgeon who operated on Shay Given‘s torn bowel following his collision with Marlon Harewood has compared the injuries to those sustained in a car crash. The Newcastle keeper picked up the injury as he and West Ham’s Harewood slid in for a 50/50 ball in Sunday’s match.

Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said: "The surgeon said he has never seen an injury like this through football. He has seen it happen in car crashes where there has been impact – I suppose that is what has caused it this time." Given is expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks following the surgery. Harewood is an animal and should’ve been sent off immediately for dangerous play. If he’d ruptured Shay’s spleen, our keeper would’ve died. That was life – threatening dangerous play and he should’ve paid.

Harewood is an animal and should’ve been sent straight off for dangerous play. The challenge was disgraceful and extremely reckless. If Shay had died, Harewood would ‘ve been a murderer. Hey, that’s a thought for a new offence – Sports Manslaughter. What d’ ya think?

There’s no way Marlon Harewood should’ve stayed on the pitch after that disgraceful challenge – on Shay of all people. I’ve met Shay quite a few times and you’d have to go a long way to find a nicer, more genuine guy in the entire sport. Shay’s a really great guy and didn’t deserve to be almost killed like that.
