Maykel Galindo is not a well-known footballer outside of the States, but his story is very interesting. Born and raised in Cuba, he played for the Cuban national team in the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup, held in the United States. Having scored in a 3-1 loss to Costa Rica, he sought asylum in the US and successfully defected. After a couple of seasons with Seattle Sounders, where his progress was halted by a very nasty injury, received when his face collided with the knee of Chivas USA ‘keeper Preston Burpo, Galindo joined Chivas USA, in 2007. Since then he hasn’t looked back.
Galindo, a striker, is one of the quickest players in MLS, but he’s more than just a sprinter. He knows what to do with the ball too, and scored 12 goals in his first season with Chivas. Although he’s already 26, he is a rising star in MLS, and has the talent to play in Europe.
Here’s the trailer for a new movie that chronicles Galindo’s defection. I doubt it will ever reach a cinema screen in the UK, but it’s due to be released in America this year. Via Ball Hype
