Michel, soon to sign for Birmingham, on the heels of soon-to-be team-mate Seb Larsson during a friendly in August ’09

Birmingham City gaffer Alex McLeish claims that imminent new signing Michel will be “a player for now and the future”.

Michel, a central midfielder for Sporting de Gijon in Spain, is expected to complete a £3million move to St Andrews in the next couple of days, subject to passing a medical.

“I said I wanted to sign players of quality during January and he fits the bill,” Big Eck said.

“[But] It’s probably better I talk about Michel once he actually comes and signs for Birmingham. But he is a holding midfielder in much the same way as we play Barry Ferguson and Lee Bowyer.

“He is very comfortable on the ball, has good quality, is only 23, has got good legs and is a player for now but also the future.”

Sounds like a decent signing who will fit nicely into the Blues’ squad, without being rushed into first-team action. McLeish has been keeping tabs on Michel for the last 12 months, and saw him first-hand when Birmingham played Gijon in a friendly in August (see photo, above).
