Europa League: Maritimo 0-0 Newcastle – Second-String Magpies Fail To Spark In Portugal (Photos & Highlights)

Maritimo 0-0 Newcastle United – Europa League – 20th September
Playing in their first European fixture since 2006/07, Newcastle failed to break down Maritimo in a stadium limited to just 5,000 seats due to building work (which they never finished).
Alan Pardew put out an understrength side against the team from the island of Madeira and despite seeing his players hit the woodwork on three separate occasions, the Magpies failed to get a goal. Indeed, at the death, the home side could’ve secured the win, only to see an effort from Valentin Roberge hit the crossbar before being cleared off the line by Davide Santon.

Was their first european fixture since 2006/7 not the qualifier they had to play to make it in to the group stage of this tourny?
I’ve watched Maritimo play there on a few occasions. You get a beautiful view from the main stand of the capital city Funchal and the coast.
Just saying.
