Newcastle United 1-2 Reading – Premier League – 19th January 2013

Alan Pardew’s nightmare season continued on Saturday at St. James’ Park, with the Magpies throwing away a one-goal lead to go down 2-1 to fellow strugglers Reading.

Newcastle were by far the better side in the first period and deservedly went ahead on 35 minutes when the impressive Yohan Cabaye curled home a free-kick. Indeed the French midfielder, returning from injury, was superb until he eventually tired in the second-half.

That second period saw the visitors start to fight back and the introduction of Adam Le Fondre was to change the game completely. The former Rotherham striker had only been on the pitch for a minute when, on 71 minutes, he bundled home from close-range. And then, six minutes later, the supersub fired home after a knock-down from Jimmy Kebe to give the Royals a vital victory.

The result sees Brian McDermott’s side just one point from safety while PArdew’s Newcastle are now just two points above the drop-zone.

As much as Newcastle are in total freefall, I don’t understand the calls for Pardew to be sacked.

The team is riddled with injuries and players leaving / left.

It’s sad to see them in such a position, but a change of management isn’t going to provide any miracles.

I can’t see them in the bottom 3 come the end of the season, but finishing 16th or 17th is shocking for a team that qualified for Europe last year.
