Newcastle United 0-2 Manchester City – Premier League – 12th January 2014
Manchester City went back to the top of the table, at least until Arsenal play tomorrow night, after a hard-fought win away at Newcastle. Edin Dzeko opened the scoring early on but Newcastle battled back and were incensed with a cracking long-range Cheik Tioté strike, which beat Joe Hart, was chalked off by ref Mike Jones due to Yoan Gouffran being in an offside position and interfering with play. The decision had Alan Pardew spitting feathers but City themselves will feel somewhat aggrieved after Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa only saw yellow for a horror challenge on Samir Nasri which saw the French midfielder stretchered off. After the break the game could have gone either way, only for Alvaro Negredo to make it 2-0 to the Citizens at the death. While City go top, the Magpies stay eighth.
