Newcastle United 0-1 Sunderland – Premier League – 21st December 2014

A late Adam Johnson goal was enough to secure yet another Tyne-Wear derby victory for Gus Poyet and Sunderland on Sunday.

Newcastle were slow starters in the firs-half, with the Black Cats looking the far more likely to score. However, in the second period, Alan Pardew’s men improved with Spanish striker Ayoze Perez denied by Costel Pantilimon on two occasions. Still, the Black Cats also came close to opening the scoring themselves, with Steven Fletcher hitting the woodwork before, in the 90th minute, wideman Johnson fired past Jak Alnwick to secure local bragging rights for Sunderland.

Poyet’s victors go 14th, four points clear of the drop-zone while the Magpies are now ninth, on 23 points.
