Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton celebrates his side’s promotion to the Premier League

Hearty congrats to Newcastle United for gaining promotion back to the Prem, after just one season in the Championship. The Magpies beat Peterborough – who go the other way, down to League One – on Saturday and then Cardiff drew 0-0 against Nottm Forest, the result that ensured Newcastle’s return to the top flight. And last night Newcastle celebrated with a 2-1 over Sheffield United at St James’ Park.

It appears a season away from the Prem spotlight has been very good for Newcastle and its fans, especially in teaching them that “big club” status is not a divine right. Relegation isn’t always such a bad thing – sometimes it can revitalise a club.

Special praise must go to manager Chris Hughton, who has done a top-class job. He used to have the air of a caretaker gaffer but you can’t argue with the results he has achieved. Can he cut it as a Premier League boss? Time will tell. For now, let the Brown Ale flow.

Personally, I’m delighted to see Newcastle back in the top flight. It’s been a duller place without Mike Ashley and co.
