Newcastle United
are just eight days away from a third-round Intertoto Cup tie (contain yourself), probably against Lillestrom of Norway. Trouble is, they have no fit strikers: Alan Shearer’s retired, Michael Owen’s crocked long-term and Shola Amoebi is struggling to recover from a hip injury. That leaves… Albert Luque. Is that the sound of Jackie Milburn turning in his grave?

Freddie Shepherd, crack out the chequebook, cause you need a new No.9 – here are the five strikers you should put at the top of your shopping list:

1 Fernando Torres
(pictured)
Young, fearless and proven at the highest level. Atletico Madrid would have to sell at the right price.

2 Miroslav Klose
Underrated and rather unfashionable, but the German’s goalcoring record speaks for itself. Again, surely Werder Bremen would have to accept a big offer.

3 Dirk Kuyt
The blonde Dutchman didn’t have a great World Cup but I think his all-action, physical style would be well-suited to the Premiership.

4 Carlos Tevez
A little animal. Fans would worship him, although I’m not sure the Argentine would settle in the north-east.

5 Darren Bent
If you’re looking for a young English striker, it
has to be Bent, who was unjustly overlooked for England’s World Cup
squad. He has it all –
pace, strength and an eye for goal. Needs to work on his first touch, but has huge potential.

Anyone you’d like to add, Toon fans?

Well, Freddy is apparently courting that well known striker David Beckham! I think he needs to get his priorities in order.
Kuyt and Bent are the only ones from that list I can imagine being tempted to St James’s.

I’d have to agree, though I think Nikola Zigic would be a decent option at a bargain price.
