Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle United – Premier League – 2nd January 2016

Arsenal increased their lead at the top of the table to two points after a hard-fought 1-0 win against an impressive Newcastle side.

After a bright opening from the Gunners, the visitors took charge and created a number of superb chances. However, once again Arsenal could rely on Petr Cech, who denied the Magpies time and time again, with Georginio Wijnaldum failing to put away his side’s best chance in the second period.

While the hosts struggled to deal with Newcastle’s vibrant and physical midfield, centre-half Laurent Koscielny once again produced a fantastic display. Therefore, it was apt that the Frenchman would be the match-winner for the north Londoners, firing home from close-range on 72 minutes after Olivier Giroud won a header in the Magpies’ box.

Aaron Ramsey spurned a great chance late on for the home side but they managed to hold on, courtesy of one of those barely deserved wins potential champions are supposed to secure on their way to lifting the title. As for Steve McClaren’s side, they can feel unlucky not to have taken at least a point away from the Emirates. However, despite the impressive display, they remain in the bottom three.
