With all this talk of Cristiano Ronaldo and his supreme overhead kicks, Pies feel it would be utterly remiss of us not to pay ‘umble ‘omage to the ordained grandmaster of the acrobatic art form: Nicholas Butt.

To the best of our knowledge, Butt only ever executed one overhead kick over the course of his 19-year professional career and it came in 2009, during the Premier League derby between Newcastle and Middlesbrough at St. James’ Park.

With Newcastle already a goal up through Marlon Harewood, Butt came off the bench a few minutes after half-time to bolster the midfield and promptly proceeded to rouse 50,000 fans with a scissor kick as spontaneous as it was confusing and unnecessary…

Excellent work from “The Enforcer”, there.

Playing for touch has never looked so elegant, before or since.
