Erm….may I inject some sense into this discussion? Joe Kinnear did not have a ‘positive’ spell at NUFC. He left us without a win in 8 games and only out of the relegation zone thanks to the shocking performances of the teams below us. Confidence was very low under Kinnear, and only sank further with Hughton & Calderwood in charge. By the time Shearer was brought in he inherited a demotivated, passionless squad with no heart for the fight and confidence at rock bottom. You only need look at the performance at Villa on the last day of the season (where a draw would have kept us up) to see that.
Shearer may be inexperienced but who else would want to come to the club right now anyway…

RobM – I’m not sure how you can put the blame for Newcastle’s relegation on Shearer. He did his best with a group of players who, on the whole, had neither the heart or the enthusiasm to keep the club up. And to attribute his appointment to simply his accent… Untried maybe, but try finding a potential candidate with more understanding, knowledge and passion for the club. Shearer, as a player, had incredible depth and knowledge of the game; he score free kicks, 30-yard volleys, headers, penalties, crossed as good as Beckham, tackled back, tackled and pressed in the opposition’s third, defended the near and far post… I could go on. You’ll struggle to find a current player who covers all these areas; and this is what Shearer will be taking into management.

You’re right. What a bad idea to use the one manager that gave the toon one of their few positive spells, such as it was, last season when they could hire an untried TV pundit who got them relegated but who at least has the right accent.

I would always listen the opposite reports to those that eminate from the Mail. Whilst I’m not just blasting the Mail at will, they tend to publish Newcastle stories with little reference or truth, such as the recent ‘player revolt’. Whilst I can accept people taking a good laugh at our club, the Daily Mail seem to be hooked on it.

Best solution would be to get an established manager in, like Sam Allardyce! Oh Newcastle, you’ll always entertain, and isn’t that what football’s about anyway?
