As we’ve already seen this morning, Newcastle United are about to embark upon a 10,419-mile round-trip tour of the States in the next few days, though one man who will not be feeling the benefit of all those lovely air miles will be poor old Joey Barton – who has been refused a VISA for, essentially, kicking seven shades out of a guy in front of a McDonald’s a couple of years ago.

As a reformed ex-con you’d imagine that Barton would just take the set-back on the chin and move on (he will now join the reserves on a trip to Holland), which he very nearly managed to do – telling the Newcastle website:

“Unfortunately, I was denied my VISA due to my past. I regret not being able to travel with the club on this trip, but at the same time, I don’t expect to be treated any differently or more favourably than anyone else in a similar situation.

“All I can do is continue to improve as a person, which is what I intend to do.”

All fairly graceful I’m sure you’ll agree, a new-found level of maturity that lasted up until he took to Twitter a few minutes later:

“Total hypocrisy considering what [America] gets up to but rules are rules………”

Nearly Joey, nearly. One step at a time old bean.

I think the visa authorities don’t like his new hairstyle….

  2. Dave says:

he’s got a point, stupid yanks.

  3. lordrt says:

They can allow terrorists to get in, but not a reformed football player (or soccer as these stupid americans call it for fuck’s sake)

  4. Mr. Angry says:

    fuckin yanks

  5. oh england says:

    what’s wrong britty-boos? U MAD?

  6. bullybully says:

To be fair they’re tough as fuck with everyone. My mate couldn’t get in with a cuba stamp on his passport. Another mate couldn’t get in simply for punching a dickhead whilst wearing a bear costume. Good that they’re not doing joey any favours.

  7. nickooo says:

lol unlucky but he does have a point.

    Fucking daft americans.

  8. jamie says:

Looking at some of these comments, it’s not just Barton or the Americans that are fucking stupid.

  9. Andre says:

Oh stupid Americans, I’m so mad I can’t get into your lousy country filled with stupid jerks! Wah wah. What if an American player had the same issue? Would I go around blaming England because a foreign national beat some guy up in your country? No. Grow up. What the Americans get up to? Isn’t the entire world disgusted with UK media right now?

  10. Hobbes says:

So the USA is worse than Joey Barton? Blind British hatred is like a box chocolates.

  11. Red Devilish says:

Too bad, but if you take an action you have to be prepared to face all the consequences. Joey Barton sounds a lot smarter than most of you.

  12. dc says:

Joey’s just mad he can’t travel to the hipster mecca of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

  13. Montesquieu says:

The fact of the matter is, you’re all listening to the political tirade of an idiot and an ex-convict. We all know deep inside who the real idiots here are.

  14. JS says:

He also had some nice things to say about Americans in the full quote, which unsurprisingly hasn’t been printed here.
Without selective editing there’d be no story, would there?

  15. Anon says:

Stop crying, mugs. At least the US don’t allow a flood of immigrants in, unlike the welfare state of Britain.

  16. Matt says:

Joey Barton, spokesman for the oppressed.

Jesus, I just read his wikipedia page, he’d better stay out of the US, with our criminal justice system he’d be in jail within a week.

Are people really defending this nutjob? How many felonies does it take to keep you out of the UK?

  17. Riley says:

He’s fucking street trash. I applaud our immigration office for keeping him out.

  18. RyanSSL says:

Ohhhh the poor British… they lost their Empire and now they are totally irrelevant in the World.

  19. Calski says:

Are you saying that everyone who has been in a prison, has been denied into America? No, I don’t think so. It is only because he is high profile person.

  20. Ryan says:

Good. Keep that trash on the other side of the pond. HA !

  21. Solihull United says:

im glad to see so many people taking pride in calling it soccer or football. its a fucking word, get over yourselves. same sport.

  22. JS says:

He’s actually said some nice things about Americans in the full quote (which, for the sake of sensationalism you won’t find here).

  23. Ozzy says:

I’m pretty sure they don’t willingly allow terrorists in. Barton deserves this, he should count himself lucky not to be in prison right now.

  24. tim says:

    Joey,

    We hate mustaches. That’s why.

    Best,
    ‘merica

  25. Maxi says:

@lordrt: You know the Brits came up with the term soccer, right? For fuck’s sake…

  26. Chris says:

He has no one to blame, but himself. He was the one who took the actions of breaking the law on various occasions, and this is one of the consequences, a rather minor consequence, of his actions.

The agency responsible for issuing the visa had a set of standards to follow, and decided not to grant him a visa based upon those standards.

Nevertheless, Joey Barton has been given a considerable amount of leeway by the courts in England, for the simple reason that he is a “talented” footballer. He should be more considerate, reflecting upon those circumstances.

  27. MR. T says:

Barton is trash. and same with all those stupid enough to agree with him

  28. Dick Naylor says:

It’s real easy to point the finger at the “fucking yanks.”

  29. engerland_supporter says:

Disgraceful bullshit from the immigration nazis. Personally I don’t like Barton a bit, but this is awful.

  30. Tinez says:

All he needs is 2 more years without any more trouble to his name. Then he can travel wherever he wants in the US.

  31. haters gon hate says:

AmeriKKKa is allowed to act as a formal nation although beit once established through the genocide of American Indians and the enslavement of blacks. Joey Barton is no different…

  32. Fat Nakago says:

I’m an American and I think it’s stupid.

  33. Patrick says:

Ohio just passed a concealed carry law for Stadiums, so he should consider himself lucky.

  34. MR COOL ICE says:

MR COOL ICE SAYS LET JOEY BARTON PLAY.

  35. edd says:

Did’nt the American’s invent the word (IMPORTANTLY), enough said. Joey your a legend !

  36. Dick Naylor says:

@haters gon hate, sure America might not have the best track record when it comes to human rights… but neither does England. They practically invented imperialism.

  37. says:

What is it that we “get up to” anyway?

  38. Tinez says:

He went on holiday to LA and Las Vegas earlier in the summer, but has been denied a visa this time because it’s a business trip rather than pleasure. So you’ve let him in unchaperoned earlier on in the year. Enjoy the irony.
