It has been announced that, as a mark of respect on the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, that every single football match in the Premier League, Football League, Football Conference and the FA Cup semi-final between Wigan and Arsenal will kick-off seven minutes later than usual.
Why seven minutes? Well, we’re fairly sure we don’t have to tell you but the match at which the disaster took place, the FA Cup semi between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, was ended six minutes after kick-off – at 3:06pm.
This means that, at 3:06pm, every game in England across the weekend of 11th-14th April will observe a minute’s silence in memory of Hillsborough before kicking off at 3:07pm, which, in Pies’ humble opinion, is a wonderfully fitting gesture.
Fixtures kicking off at other times (i.e, not 3pm) on Friday 11th, Saturday 12th, Sunday 13th and Monday 14th April will all observe the same etiquette, with matches kicking-off seven minutes later than originally scheduled.
