It’s that time of year again, with the PFA pumping out their shortlists for the 2014 ‘Player Of The Year’ and ‘Young Player Of The Year’ awards.

The six contenders for the big award are as follows…

Diego Costa
Philippe Coutinho
David De Gea
Eden Hazard
Harry Kane
Alexis Sanchez

While the six contenders for the l’il award be these fine ruddy-faced young fellows…

Philippe Coutinho
David De Gea
Eden Hazard
Harry Kane
Thibaut Courtois
Raheem Sterling

A lot of overlap going on there. It’s either a sign that the young players in the Premier League are very good, or that there really aren’t that many good players in the Premier League at the moment.

We’ll let you be the judge on that particular score.

As for Pies’ predictions: Hazard is more than likely a shoe-in for PFAPOTY (though we think De Gea is more deserving), while we’re inclined to presume Harry Kane is going to have his fairytale ¾-season rewarded with the PFAYPOTY trinket while it’s still fresh in the mind.

You say?

    I say wait six weeks.

Honestly I’m somewhat surprised that Rooney and Fabregas aren’t in the running.

Costa shouldn’t be in there, him and Hazard both would be performing at a significantly lower level without the work of Fabregas. I think Fabregas should replace Costa.

Also, I’m a Liverpool fan, and I don’t believe Coutinho merits inclusion. He goes invisible on occasion and Liverpool haven’t been good enough as a team to merit a player in this list. I think Rooney’s leadership has really gotten Man United back on track, and they are over-performing in the table for the talent they have. Rooney deserves a nomination, and in my opinion, possibly the award as a whole depending on how the season pans out.

Rooney has been magnificent for United this season when played in the right position. I’m very surprised he’s not in the running. De Gea should win it, no question about that. Without his shot stopping, United would not be in the position they’re in.

De Gea should win it….doesnt matter….DE GEA has been constant so far.. Harry Kane goes missing on big games…

  7. Marvin says:

If a young player wins POTY, how could he possibly not also win YPOTY?
POTY = you are best player in league bar none
YPOTY = you are best young player in league, even better than the guy who is the all round best in the league.

Kane goes missing in big game? Arsenal and Chelsea – two goals apiece. Not sure about that
