After being dispatched to treat an elderly man who had fallen in central London yesterday, cycle response paramedic Catherine Maynard was forced to keep both her and her patient warm while they waited in the perishing cold for an ambulance.
It was at that point a choir of herald angels suddenly burst into voice, the clouds parted and David Beckham descended from on high in a shard of heavenly golden light.
After greeting Ms Maynard and the old chap she was attempting to keep warm, Beckham clambered back into his car.
Several minutes later he returned to the scene with a selection of hot teas and coffees.

Maynard (that’s her on the right) relayed the story to BBC News thus:
We were both very amused and flattered. All of a sudden, I looked up and saw someone who looked like David Beckham walking past us.
He said hello and got in his car. I said to the man I was treating, ‘I think that was David Beckham’.
Ten minutes later, he came back with a cup of coffee for me and a tea for the patient.
It was awful cycling around in the cold today and I couldn’t believe it when he came back with some hot drinks – I was so chuffed.
The man is a saint. He once helped push a knackered Nissan Primera onto the hard shoulder on the A10 roundabout you know?
