Having spent his formative years plugging away in the lower recesses of the French leagues, Riyad Mahrez has openly admitted that his knowledge of Leicester City was fairly limited at the point they made their move to sign him back in January of 2014.

In fact, Mahrez initially assumed Leicester were a rugby club, given that most sport fans in France are generally more au fait with the Foxes’ egg-chasing neighbours from nearby Welford Road.

Speaking in the April issue of FourFourTwo magazine, Mahrez said:

I didn’t know Leicester. In France we didn’t really [know them] because they were in the Championship. I thought they were a rugby club. I was like: ‘I don’t know…’

But then I came here to see the facilities and they were good. I do not regret signing for them, it’s the best club I’ve ever been at.

Aww bless. We can only imagine that turning up to see the likes of Wes Morgan and Marcin Wasilewski on his first day must’ve only complicated things further.
