“Whut can I get ya son? How ’bout a rootin’ tootin’ Sarsaparilla?”

It has been confirmed that part-time footballer/Wild West saloon barkeep David Beckham has missed the cut for the ‘Team GB’ Olympic football squad – despite the fact that Team GB have used his name to sell a shed-load of tickets over the past few months.

The Guardian have confirmed that Beckham will not be called upon by coach Stuart Pearce, who is believed to have decided to opt for Craig Bellamy, Ryan Giggs and Micah Richards  – a man who refused a place on England’s Euro 2012 reserve list a few weeks back – as his three ‘over-age’ players.

Beckham, who is believed to have a part in the opening ceremony, is quoted as saying:

“Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me. I would have been honoured to have been a part of this unique Team GB squad.

“Naturally, I’m very disappointed. There will be no bigger supporter of team than me.”

We’ll have the full squad as and when it’s announced…

Worth a read for the picture caption alone

  2. Mr Sensible says:

That is strange, to be honest I couldn’t give a shit about the Football in the Olympics but the fact is Beckham has been a massive help in London getting the games and if he really did want to be a part of it then I don’t see why he shouldn’t be included.

  3. Wilma says:

Giggs retires from internationals five years ago, and then decides to turn out for England-and-the-stuff-England-owns…

  4. Alex says:

it is a bit dirty how they’ve used him as a marketing ploy for so long. I’m surprised they didn’t pick an english icon seeing as it is really an English olympic games, with the greatest respect to Wales. plus Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy are awful men.

  5. Terry Shedingham says:

    Yeah, fantastic caption!

  6. Tosser says:

Wow, just wow. I feel for the man, one barely functioning Welshman bumped him?

  7. :) says:

how is micah richards an over-age player?

  8. garza says:

This is ridiculous. Beckham sold the Olympics to football fans around the world. It’s just disrespectful to give a spot to someone like Giggs when you have Beckham practically begging for one last chance.

  9. Rob says:

Perhaps they are actually trying to win gold, instead of doing what England did and give him as many caps as possible.

  10. Rob says:

Seb Coe did a lot for the games too so should they throw him into the 800 metres?

  11. Anonymous says:

The right decision from a football perspective, but a dirty prick move against a guy who bleeds for his country. Does anyone think they have a chance? Hell no, let Becks have his moment, the poor guy needs a break after his hard life.

  12. sloth says:

    1. If the Euros taught us anything, England are pretty much shit everywhere except dead-ball situations, and that’s really the only place where Beckham is still usefull.
    2. It’s the Olympics, not the World Cup. They ought to be treating it as a development tournament for the future. Beckham obviously has loads of international experience that would make him a useful locker-room presence and leader for all the young’ns.
    3. C’mon the guy poured his heart and soul into the Olympic bid and has made it clear that he desperately wanted this last hurrah. Give him his final international run-out for Christ’s sake.

  13. R-Hops says:

@Garza: someone like Giggs? The most decorated British footballer of all time who still plays and trains at the highest level? Beckham should be there with Giggs, Beckham instead of Bellamy would have been a better argument. Even though it maybe a better footballing decision, money making from Becks’ name and shirt sales then not selecting him is just shitty to be honest.

  14. Jarren says:

No-one gives a shit about how Team GB do in this.

They should have put Beckham on the team, it would have been great for British publicity.

As I said, who cares how well the team do? No-one.

Beckham should have been there. His presence alone would have spurred the team on.

    A big mistake.

  15. Grant says:

Is it really a cowboy ‘stache? I think it looks more like he has some Captain in him.

  16. Grant says:

Also, keep in mind that someone could get injured. Ask Micah about that. Oh wait, the cunt quit the team over being an alternate and would have gone to the tournament anyway since there were 42184141 injuries in the build up. How he gets picked to the Olympic team after that shit is beyond me. What pisses me off even more is that Becks had in his new extension he signed this winter that he is released for the duration of the tournament whether he plays or not. So he’s gonna leave the Galaxy just to go there and hobnob with Will and Kate. Makes me sick.

  17. garza says:

@R-Hops Oh damn, I just saw what I wrote. No, of course you’re right. I typed that in the middle of the night and I wrote Giggs when I meant Bellamy. Brain fart. Er, maybe because I think he’s an arse.

  18. Dave says:

To be honest, I think they’ve just used Beckham, perhaps it could be argued on footballing terms he shouldn’t be included…. but it’s the fucking olympics so no one gives a shit, people would care if Beckham was playing, lining up beside Giggs one last time. The man deserves it and has every right to be pissed off.

  19. Rob says:

Asking all the people who say he deserves to be there. Why does he?
Certainly not for footballing reasons. All the other squad’s over age players are there because they play in the highest leagues.
What’s wrong if Pearce picks a team to try and win it?
So Beckham did a lot for the bid, but not as a footballer, it was as a celebrity.
