Gus Poyet’s first game in charge of Brighton couldn’t have gone much better. To win away to an in-form Saints – and so convincingly – is a hugely encouraging result for the Seagulls and their long-suffering fans.

Glenn Murray put Brighton 1-0 up after 16 minutes with a terrific volley and he doubled the lead just six minutes later. Rickie Lambert halved the visitors’ lead with a penalty just before half-time, but Brighton sealed the win through Andrew Crofts.
