A tearful America supporter sits outside Angeles Hospital, awaiting news of star player Salvador Cabanas, who was shot in the head in a Mexico City bar in the early hours of Monday morning.

Cabanas, who was a reported transfer target of Sunderland, is in a critical but stable condition after undergoing seven hours of emergency surgery. Dr. Ernesto Martinez, who performed the surgery, said he was unable to remove the bullet, which is lodged in the back of Cabanas’ brain.

“We would do more damage if we tried to extract it,” Martinez told reporters. “We cannot assure you that he is out of danger. He is young and healthy. That helps.”

This incident has stunned fans in Paraguay and Mexico, where Cabanas has played his club football for seven years – he is a football superstar in his homeland, so for his playing career to be ended so suddenly and violently is nothing less than a tragedy. We can only hope now that Salvador recovers to the extent that he can lead a normal life.
