World Cup Flashback: Diego Maradona Torments England, 1986 World Cup Quarter-Final

Diego Maradona, in his genius prime, prepares to dribble past Big Terry Butcher – and then Little Kenny Sansom – during Argentina’s infamous 2-1 win over England at the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico, aka the ‘Hand of God’ match. Inspired by their brilliant captain, Argentina went on to win the tournament, beating Belgium 2-0 in their semi final (Maradona scored both goals) and West Germany 3-2 in the final.

  1. Kenny Sansom is at a sports mans dinner and the tickets are available to everyone. I am going myself there is a memorabilia auction for charity. You can buy tickets from Arsenal Football Memorabilia store I paid £50 for my ticket. They said I was lucky to get one as they where running low but who isnt going to say that.

Great shot, never seen this one before. Christ, what a difference in size! Makes the Lennon/Crouchy combo look normal

Y’know, I have a theory about why England didn’t win the ’86 World Cup: a Karma Deficit. Let me explain: in ’66, the Germans were beaten due to a goal that wasn’t. Karma points: England -1, Germany 1. In 1986, Argentina beat England with the ‘hand of god’- England 0, Argentina -1, Germany 1. Finally, in 1990 Germany beat Argentina through a dubious penalty- England, Germany and Argentina 0. Having said that, I’d have to deduct Argentina 1 for buying their way to the ’78 title, leaving Holland (unfairly losing finalist) with a karma point yet to be cashed in. What all this means? That Holland will win the World Cup this year, beating Argentina along the way by a non-goal, of course. You hear it here first.
