Not a classic game by any means, but it was very, VERY tight and so I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Either side could have won, but in the end Mohamed Gedo’s excellent curling shot, scored in the 85th minute, earned Egypt their third ACN title in a row, and a record seventh overall. They deserved it too, having played the best football throughout the tournament. How different the result might have been had Ghana’s first-choice XI started – but their young, inexperienced team did very well to make it this far.

Overall, Angola 2010 was a poor tournament. The flat tone was set by the appalling Togo bus tragedy – more on that later today – and the action on the pitch continued the theme. Many teams didn’t seem especially interested, especially those that have qualified for this summer’s World Cup – it’s no great surprise that the winners didn’t have South Africa in the back of their minds.

As I have said before, there has to be a good case for decreasing the regularity of this usually wonderful tournament – once every four years would be fine.

I think the 30 degree heat and the 70% humidity may have taken some of the ‘oomph’ out of it as well.

A decidely rubbish standard coupled with a lack of tempo made it a tournament to forget.
