While we can’t even dream of surpassing Gigi Buffon’s gushing tribute to Francesco Totti on his 20th year in the game, Pies have cobbled together a humble tribute to the granite-jawed, inexplicably handsome Roma legend in the shape of a dozen of his finest stills from the archives…

While we’re on the subject, here’s a highlight reel of Il Gladiatore’s best bits…

And here he is trying to talk Americano…

And here’s a classic clip of Totti and Alessandro Del Piero losing it while chatting about something or other…

Just an Italian version of Matt Le Tissier. Big nosed, one club cult hero who never cut it on the international stage (and he had more goes at it than Le Tiss).

  2. ERG1008 says:

Thought he was great in Nirvana.

  3. Never cut it on the international stage, huh? You must have missed the pic of Francesco holding that big gold thing on his head.

Stu you sound a bit like David Pleat. Completely fucking clueless about the topic of Football.

  5. Stu says:

@James C – Of course, their World Cup win was solely down to him, he really tore up that tournament with that one penalty against Australia. One of the most overrated players of his generation.

  6. Stu's conscience says:

Man, am I clueless. I have no idea of what World football is. I’m just a poor british bloke who thinks the championship is on par with all the rest of Europe’s top leagues. About Totti and the World Cup, I seem to miss important figures like him having been the player with the most assists (5) and setting the tempo in the midfield of the best team in the World. He was also a nobody in 2000, when they reached the final! I also seem to think he was never good enough to get out of AS Roma. Like he never got specific offers from Milan, aged 19, and Real Madrid, aged 24.

Come to think of it, I think I’m right. Totti would never score 24 goals in the Premier League, like the great Darren Bent. Also, Teddy Sheringham is the best striker of all time!

    @Stu
Of course being the second highest scorer in Serie A history means nothing; captaining ROma for how many years has it been? and still being a game changer putting up good numbers and being a terror to defences at this ripe ol age? tell me more on how hes so overrated? miles better than giggs wishes he could be, better than scholes, beckham, or any other thing united or any english team has put out over the years; I think he won a european golden boot a few years ago as well

  8. smrc says:

@ Stu – 1 crucial (though controversial) penalty and 4 assists throughout the whole tournament is quite an influence – i guess it’s hard to argue with those facts. Ok, he’s still not Pirlo, but c’mon.

  9. respect_for_totti says:

What a stupid comment Stu, obviously u havent been watching football for the past 15 years or so. what a joke

  10. V says:

Smrc, those were 5 assists, actually; Also, he has always been even more influential than Pirlo, throughout his whole career.

  11. Stu says:

@everyone – Yes indeed I am clueless and I haven’t watched football for the past 15 years and I think Gareth Bale is better than Messi and the Prem is the bollocks etc etc just because, regarding Francesco, to quote PE, I “Don’t believe the Hype”. Said it once and I’ll say it again, just an Italian Matt Le Tissier.

  12. V says:

Banalizing one of the best, most unique players that has ever played… You are, indeed, clueless.

  13. Stu says:

Christ, I never knew people could be so touchy over some Italian fella they’ve seen a couple of times on the telly. Myth and Legend > Reality for some people.
