England were crap in the first half – it was like watching a training match – and impressive in the second half, thanks to the introduction of Peter Crouch. With Crouchinho in place as a willing target man, England’s midfield took control as Egypt visibly tired.

Two goals by Crouch, both cool finishes inside the box, sandwiched a goal by sub Shaun Wright-Phillips (a swerving shot that Egypt’s keeper should have saved). The old Large and Little show spared Capello’s blushes.

If Crouch and SWP were winners on the night, the losers were Matthew Upson, whose slip led to Zidan’s opening goal, and Theo Walcott, who was shockingly bad. But more on the that later, when we post up the England player ratings.
