With the Italian economy being as it is, AC Milan have come to the conclusion that their San Siro stadium is just far too cavernous (it has a capacity of 80,000 but is rarely anywhere near being full) to be justifiable from a financial standpoint.

With that in mind, the Rossoneri are in the process of downsizing to a new, smaller 48,000-seater stadium (much like Juventus did several years ago) in the Portello area of Milan, next door to the Alfa Romeo company headquarters.

Proposals for the new AC Milan Stadium have already been accepted in principle by city authorities, with the club hoping to have it finished and opened by 2018.

As such, the first images of the stadium’s design have been revealed today – and it looks like they used Duplo rather than any expensive, bells-and-whistles computer rendering…

Very, er, blocky isn’t it?

Call us old fuddy-duddies if you must, but we think we prefer the old San Siro – chiefly because it’s totally bonkers…

There are a few more photos of the new stadium to peruse over on the AC Milan Facebook page if you so wish.
