The kick-off of Eintracht Frankfurt’s Bundesliga tie against RB Leipzig had to be delayed last night after fans hurled hundreds of tennis balls onto the pitch.
Narked at the match being played at 8:30 on a Monday night, the supporters went to great lengths to make sure to hear their collective grievance was heard.
Frankfurt obviously caught wind of the planned protest beforehand, as a special team of grounds staff armed with leaf blowers were deployed to help hoover the blanket of stray balls off the playing surface.
Rather impressively, the fans then whistled and jeered for the *entire* match while waving banners displaying such slogans as “Monday @ 20:30? Thanks, Merkel!” and “Mondays are for sobering up”…
Bob Geldof would be proud.
For the record, Frankfurt went on to win the match 2-1, thus shunting themselves up into third place in the table.
There was also a note of slight concern for Liverpool fans, as Naby Keita – the Leipzig midfielder set to move to Anfield this coming summer – hobbled off after 60 minutes with what sounds like a rather nasty hamstring twang, though the club are yet to comment on the extent of the injury.
