Republic of Ireland's Robbie Keane (centre) battles Paraguay's Enrique Vera (left) and Antolin Alcaraz (right) for the ball.

Goals by Kevin Doyle and Liam Lawrence saw the Republic of Ireland beat Paraguay in Dublin last night.

Doyle headed the Irish ahead from close range after just eight minutes, then Lawrence’s deflected shot doubled Ireland’s lead a few minutes before half-time.

Lucas Barrios pulled a goal back for the away side on 58 minutes after a tidy move. Thereafter the Republic held out for a satisfying, albeit bittersweet win.

Ireland were very good in the first half. It sticks in the craw that we aren’t in the world cup but teams like New Zealand and Paraguay are. I understand it’s a ‘world’ cup but still.

    Fucking French.

  2. David Allison says:

New Zealand and Paraguay shouldn’t be compared in the same breath, to be fair. The latter finished 5 points ahead of Argentina beating them 1-0 at home, as well as Brazil with a 2-0 home win.

  3. Delboy Dublin says:

Which just goes to show what utterly crap sides Brazil & Argentina are under Dunga & Maradona
