Wow x4. These Germans are amazing and, for once, lovable. Perhaps it’s because they play – revelation alert! – as a team? All the star vehicles – Ronaldo, Messi, Rooney – have broken down by the side of the road in South Africa, but Germany’s incredible teamgeist only seems to be making them stronger as the tournament progresses. (And by the way, I don’t really care that Argentina took a worse beating from the Germans than England. Big deal.)

I’ll miss Maradona, mind, even if it’s fun as an Englishman to slash around in his tears. He was a lot of fun to watch. Will he quit now? It’s a very long road to Brazil 2014 and I doubt he has the stamina. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

The German machine rolls on, crushing reputations and building new ones as it goes. Can Spain pass through and around such a confident, well-drilled team? I think they can, but Xavi, Iniesta and Torres really need to help out David Villa.
