Blackpool manager Ian Holloway bristled in his post-match interview, after guiding Blackpool to ninth in the table with a squeaky-bum-time win against nine-man West Brom:

“The lowest points ever [according to many pre-season predictions]? We aren’t going to be that team, so shut up the lot of you, whoever wrote it.

“That’s what I feel like. It’s unfair. They judged us far too early.”

As one of those critics who thought Blackpool might struggle even to reach ten points for the season, I can only doff my cap to Ollie for the work he’s doing. We were all wrong to write you off. That said, I still think Blackpool will go down, but I’m fully prepared to eat more words if that doesn’t happen.

Back to the match though – it was a strange affair, with the visitors having two men sent off in the first half. The first red card, shown to Pablo Ibanez, was harsh and also resulted in a penalty for Blackpool, which Charlie Adam duly converted. But Gonzalo Jara’s ugly two-footed tackle on Luke Varney was worthy of two reds on its own – a horrible, malicious challenge. The Baggies fought valiantly to stay in the game, but with eleven versus nine, there was only one likely result.
