West Ham United striker Zavon Hines scored twice on his U-21 debut as England came out on top in a nine-goal game, which if not thrilling was certainly very entertaining.

It was the first home qualifier for Stuart Pearce’s side, and while they looked very sharp up front, to concede three goals against Macedonia – whose kids showed great fighting spirit, it must be said – is not ideal.

Still, when you look at some of the Premier League-hardened talent at Pearce’s disposal, the future looks good for England’s senior team; consider names such as Hines, Jack Rodwell, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs, Michael Mancienne, Andy Carroll, Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck… we have a lot of very talented youngsters right now, and thanks in no small part to Monsieur Arsene Wenger – who said he had no time for English talent?
