In a new series we are planning to run semi-regularly on Pies, we take a look at the great groaning pantheon of footballing and non-footballing tat that Kevin Keegan has signed up to shill over the years – starting with the ‘Goal!’ ice lolly from Lyons Maid, circa 1978.
As well as being a “terrific ice lolly with three crowd-pulling flavours” (cream soda, pineapple and strawberry…mmm), the Goal! lolly also came with a free toy that ensured that ‘when the ice-cream was finished, the game had just started’ – that’s right, a little plastic footballer, modelled on Keegan himself and moulded onto the end of the stick…
Having finished off a mere ten Goal! ice-pops, you were then tasked with painting your little plaggy chaps in the colours of your favourite teams.
You could then use your players to play Keegan’s accompanying five-a-side game (just 25p with a coupon), which looks like a whole boat-load of turn-based, cardboard fun…
