Soccer - William Hill Scottish Cup - Quarter Final - Rangers v Albion Rovers - Ibrox

The footballing feel-good stories just keep on coming today with the news that Albion Rovers have announced that the club are going to donate a healthy wedge of the television money they’ve managed to rake in on their run to the Scottish Cup quarter-finals to charity.

Albion drew 1-1 with Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday in the quarters, thus earning themselves a lucrative replay – with it being estimated that the League Two (i.e, the Scottish fourth tier) club can expect to earn around £250,000 thanks to Sky Sports signing a deal to screen both ties live.

Thanks to that windfall, a local children’s charity are about to find themselves £10,000 better off after Albion chairman John Devlin revealed the club would be donating a large sum of their television money to the Cash For Kids Appeal.

Devlin told the Daily Record:

“So often Albion Rovers as a club have gone cap in hand to others looking for sponsorship and money [so] we are absolutely delighted to give £10,000 to the Cash For Kids Appeal.”

Bloody good on ’em!

Albion Rovers have won, regardless of the result in the replay with Rangers!

  2. Devlin and the rest of the misguided board need to take a long look at themselves after this decision ( FOLLY ) ,£10,000.00 to charity must be a world record donation , because I am sure that if ManUtd , Chelsey , Barcelona or Real Madrid had stumped up this amount for what ever charity, the ‘ HYPE’ would have resounded around the world courtesy of the publicists employed by the clubs ! . John Devlin may go down as a benefactor for this charity and had his accolades courtesy of local papers , but time alone will tell if this amount of money would have been better deployed within the coffers of the club for the inevitable RAINY DAYS IN THE FUTURE !!!!!!!!! . The season prior to this WINDFALL MATCH the club recorded a trading deficit of some £17,00.00 , which was a cause for great consternation at board level and also with the SUPPORTERS TRUST . All will out eventually and I hope for the club , it’s supporters , playing and ancillary staff also board of directors that this gesture does not come home to roost .
