Stan Collymore has been dropped from BT Sport’s coverage of Friday’s Raith Rovers v Rangers Scottish Championship clash after the former Liverpool man had an Twitter altercation with a number of Rangers fans.
Collymore had claimed that Rangers’ games should not be broadcast by BT, due to the sectarian chanting of the club’s supporters. This, unsurprisingly, open the gates of Twitter hell with Gers’ fans quick to hit back. Indeed, some even brought up Collymore’s history of domestic violence in a number of heated discussions.
In light of all that malarkey, the powers-that-be at BT Sport decided to remove the 44-year-old from their coverage of Rangers’ game on Friday. Collymore, as expected, responded in his own inimitable style…
BT Sport responded with this rather limp statement:
“BT Sport does not agree with any form of racism and believes that it should not be tolerated in Sport. It is a subject which should be tackled and discussed in the correct manner.
“We did not agree with the nature of the debate on twitter, and which BT Sport was brought into without prior agreement. BT Sport will raise and discuss the issue within its programming when relevant and in an appropriate manner.”
Whether or not all this is a permanent decision is not quite clear. However, despite Collymore’s own chequered past, he does seem to be one of the few pundits with the backbone to address some of the game’s darker elements head-on.
