The two sides have come close over the years but finally, on Sunday, the fabled scoreline between East Fife and Forfar joked about by Eric Morecambe finally became a reality… well, sort of anyway.

Morecambe shared a running joke with his friend James Alexander Gordon, the voice of the BBC classified football results for over 40 years, about East Fife losing out to Forfar in a wonderful tongue-twister of an encounter – the ultimate challenge for any commentator.

Sure enough, the Scottish League Cup group B tie between the pair this weekend had to be decided by a penalty shootout, which ended East Fife 4 – Forfar 5…

Sadly, Morecambe died in 1984 and Gordon passed away in 2014, meaning neither lived to witness the result – or as close to it as we’re likely to see for quite some time to come.

As mentioned, Forfar and East Fife have come close to realising the famous comedic scoreline in the past, though it was all the way back in 1964 when Forfar won 5-4 at home, thus unfortunately being the wrong round.

Skip forward to 2011 and East Fife managed a 4-3 win over Forfar at the Bayview Stadium, but alas neither side were able to add that critical extra goal required.
