VETERAN (this guy was born between the wars) Rangers centre-back David Weir has been drafted back into the Scotland squad to face both Lithuania and Lichtenstein in next month’s Euro 2012 qualifying games at the grand old age of 40.
Weir hadn’t been included in either of the first two squads that current coach Craig Levein announced after taking over from George Burley in December, his last game being Scotland’s defeat at the hands of the Dutch in a World Cup qualifier during September of last year.
Levein revealed his reasoning to the Scottish FA’s official website;
“The thing about Davie is he is still playing at the highest level week in, week out. The fact he is still turning in top-class performances means it was a pretty easy decision to make for me.
“I had a good chat with him and I told him I was not just bringing him along for the ride. I had a look at a few people in the last couple of games but we are playing for real now.
“My job is to pick the best players for each position and if you look around, Davie is probably as good as anyone.”
Not sure if this says more about Weir’s performances for Rangers or the current lack of quality in the Scottish defensive ranks but our congrats go out to Davie regardless. This one’s for you ol’ faithful…
