Still reeling in the wake of Piermario Morosini’s fatal heart attack while playing for Livorno a weekend ago, the subject of heart monitoring and pitchside resuscitation has understandably been at the forefront of Italian football’s collective mind for the last ten days.

The Italian FA are currently discussing bringing about blanket improvements in the access to defibrillators at all professional grounds, but AC Milan striker Stephan El Shaarawy has set his sights a little lower – donating a portable defibrillation unit to his boyhood club, Legino Calcio 1919.

In a joint effort with Milan, 19-year old El Shaarawy (along with his parents) returned to his hometown of Savona on Monday afternoon to hand over the gift to his former club which he left, aged 14, to join Genoa’s youth ranks in 2006.

A couple of hundred people turned out to witness El Shaarawy’s visit to Legino Calcio, with the Milan youngster delaying his return to Milan to sign autographs, pose for photos and thank the club for setting him off on an ‘adventure’ by giving him his ‘football education.’

Good lad.

By hook or by crook, we somehow managed to get through that without so much as one ‘shocking hair’ gag. Very proud.
