The eyes have it

Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu is facing a twelve-month ban from football after failing doping tests in January.

Traces of banned substance Subitramine (a weight supressant) were detected in Mutu’s samples, taken on both the 10th and 20th of January, and now the CONI (Italian Olympic Commitee) has received notice from prosecutors for the forward to be banned for one year as a result of violating world doping codes.

The relevant statement from CONI’s official website reads;

“The antidoping office has referred the Fiorentina player Adrian Mutu to the national antidoping tribunal of the CONI in relation to the violation of Article 2.1 of the [World Anti-Doping Agency] code following the presence of the substance Subitramine during controls in relation to Fiorentina [vs] Bari and Fiorentina [vs] Lazio, consequently with the application of a one year ban according to [regulations] of the WADA.”

The troubled 31-year-old is no stranger to drug controversy. After being caught messing around with the Colombian marching powder during his time at Chelsea, the club duly cancelled his contract and sued him to compensate. The legal wranglings thereafter left Mutu roughly €17 million out of pocket – a fine that he will now find even more difficult to pay off.
