‘I’m Not Handsome, It Was My Only Chance’ – Antonio Cassano Admits He Was A Sex Addict During His Real Madrid Days

When once asked what he’d be if he weren’t a professional footballer, Peter Crouch famously replied “a virgin”.

It would appear that the same may be true for one Antonio Cassano, who has revealed that his former status as a Real Madrid player definitely proved a more potent aphrodisiac than his craggy face ever had up to that point.

Discussing his ‘wild child’ reputation in an interview with AS (coming via L’Equipe), the 33-year-old Sampdoria striker admitted that, while his days of temper, excess and rebellion are now behind him, he certainly remembers them with a certain misty-eyed fondness.

It began with a question about Cassano’s assertion in his autobiography that his perfect night involved simply “sex then food” – the pertinent passage in question reading thus:

In Madrid, I had a friend who was a hotel waiter. His job was to bring me three or four pastries after I had sex.

He would bring the pastries up the stairs, I would escort the woman to him and we would make an exchange: he would take the girl and I would take the pastries.

Sex and then food, a perfect night.

After fielding the query from AS, Cassano took a moment to mull things over before replying:

Perfect! Those are the best things. Until February of 2008 anyway – then I met my wife. But until then, yes.

He was then asked if he was addicted to sex during his time in the Spanish capital:

Yes. When you’re 20 and like girls, there’s a force that allows you to do it every day. And I had the chance! Cassano was a Madrid player!

If I had done anything else, no-one would have looked at me… like my mother! I’m good, but I’m not handsome.

The former Roma forward was then asked if his various binges ever impinged on his performances on the pitch.

On the eve of a 4-0 win over Juventus, I stole the keys to Trigoria (Roma’s training facility) and came back at six o’clock in the morning.

I had my best night on the pitch, I won a penalty and scored two goals.

Guessing that’s a ‘no’ then?

Having battled with weight and conditioning problems throughout his career, Cassano admitted he has just about learned to reign in his cravings for post-sex pastries, etc.

I’m addicted to food, even now. As a friend of mine once said, when you eat good things, you get fat.

Obviously if you eat a lot every day, you are a fool, and I was a fool for 20 years. Now I can’t do it.

And finally, Cassano was asked if he had any major regrets as far as his career is concerned.

I was a total disaster for the first 16 years of my life.

You can call me a rebel or a madman, but I can’t change how I started. I’m happy this way.

Shine on you crazy diamond.
