Thousands of Fiorentina fans poured into the Piazza Santa Croce on Thursday morning to say their final farewells to Davide Astori, who died on Saturday aged just 31.
The square was awash with purple flags and banners as mourning Viola supporters filled the streets ahead of the defender’s funeral service at the Basilica.

A host of Astori’s former friends, teammates and colleagues attended the service, with Luciano Spaletti, Marco van Basten, Damiano Tommasi, Alessandro Costacurta, Francesco Totti and Juventus quarter Massimiliano Allegri, Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgino Chiellini and Andrea Brzagli all turning up to pay their respects to their fallen comrade.
