What a bizarre game! We usually don’t cover U21 matches but this one, a European Championship qualifier in Casarano, literally had it all – Sendings off? Two – Derrick Williams (Aston Villa) on 36 minutes and Anthony Forde (Wolves) on 84. Penalties? One – missed by Ciro Immobile (Genoa) on 37 minutes. And goals? Six of them – For Italy, Luca Caldirola (Cesena) on 35 and Stephen El Shaarawy (Milan) on 89 and for the Irish, Watford’s Sean Murray on 23, Aaron Doran of Inverness CT on 57 and 76 and Arsenal’s Conor Henderson on 59.

Murray (at the start of the video below) and Henderson (2:50 into the hghlights) produced two stunning efforts which really are worth a look.

Unfortunately for Noel King’s side, they still can’t qualify for the finals next summer. But both the result and some of the goals hint at quite a decent future for the Boys in Green.

And not one of them will get a sniff of senior football as long as Trap is in charge.

He done great to get us to the Euro finals, and we’re all very thankful, but time for a fresh approach.
