Like a weeble, it took some going to knock Diego Maradona over – ask Andoni Goikoetxea.

What we have here is a six-minute compilation (including some really rather rare footage) of Maradona in his pomp; weaving, carving and squeezing through hacks and tackles like wild, thin mercury.

In short: it’s a true joy to behold…

We’ll never see another like him. A human being seemingly custom-built for unfettered footballing genius.

How anyone can claim Pele was better than Maradona beggars belief as far as we’re concerned.

Many thanks to one of Pies’ favourite football scribes, Richard Whittal (@RWhittal), for bringing this one to our attention.

    Maradona was a selfish midget who played for no one but himself. Of course it’s hard to knock over a hobbit on magic dust. Yes he was exciting to watch at times but he never elevated the game beyond his shire yard. That is why Pele is the better player, it was more than just about himself.

      @Ryan

      That whole paragraph stunk of petty bitterness. His stature as one the greatest footballers is unquestioned(I’d say all things considered “greatest”, But it’s apples and oranges)

  2. Mr Sensible says:

    I personally prefer Maradona but i can totally understand why some would say Pele was better, most of his performances were never filmed so it’s hard to judge him really, but statistically Pele was immense, 3 WCs and over 700 goals.

  3. Mr Sensible says:

    @Ryan

    What are you talking about he never elevated his game? He’s arguably the only player to pretty much single handedly win a WC and took a club side who had never won the league to 2 league titles and a European trophy, the man was an absolute genius.

  4. Ian Rush says:

    looks like a less talented Suarez to me. Dont know what all the fuss is about.

  5. Evan says:

    Would be interesting to see a Mr. Lionel Messi against that era’s defenders.

  6. dc says:

    Evan, you mean the slow moving, “industrious” lads of old? Apart from them attempting to remove his knee from the rest of his body, he would have torn them to shreds.

  7. TravisKOP says:

    when he went down its only because someone truly took him down. And his acceleration was insane

    Maradona for me has been the best player of my fathers decade. he took his team from third division (naples) to First division and champions and league trophies something that we will never see again. we as football fans cannot just go against a persons mistakes, thus see the important what he did on that pitch. Congrats to pele and his WC glory.

  9. Chris says:

    Never mind Pele, think most ppl compare him with Messi…if you grew up in the late 80s good chance you favour Maradona for sheer unpredicability.

  10. edmond says:

    thank you very much for the memories.
    Maradona by far is the best player in his era.
    no question about Pele also but Pele had a better players around him.
    Maradona never really had a great cast of players around him, he had to do all the work. The one time Maradona had a great palyers cast was in the last world cup he played in , in which they kicked him out for substance abuse.. ( full of bullshit ).
    say all you want, no one comes close to Maradona nor there ever will be.
    A player that goes from one end of the field to the other end over and over and over again in all the games he has played is something you will never see again..
