Inspired by watching Ligue 1’s answer to Tony Hibbert, ex-PSG right-back Francis Llacer, score his magnum opus earlier in the week, we thought we’d cobble together a little compendium of other great goals scored by otherwise decidedly average players.

We’ll start with a man who almost defines the word ‘hum drum’ and his once-in-a-career display of amazing technique, flair and exuberance against Spurs some years ago…

1. Rory Delap (Southampton) vs Tottenham, 2004

2. Nigel Quashie (Portsmouth) vs Blackburn, 2000

‘Quashie Well Wide’ sticks one inside the post/stadium for once…

3. John O’Shea (Manchester United) vs Arsenal, 2005

Proof that sometimes the very last thing you expect to happen happens

4. Erik Edman (Tottenham) vs Liverpool, 2005

Most of the time Edman was a player you could actually feel yourself forgetting about while watching him play…

5. Vinnie Jones (Chelsea) vs Liverpool, 1991

Vinnie Jones: 99.999% unstable nutcase, 0.001% master of his craft…

6. Cameron Jerome (Stoke) vs Southampton, 2012

He may have somewhat restored his reputation with Norwich this season, but Jerome’s slingshot against the Saints came as a true shock at the time…

7. Titus Bramble (Ipswich) vs Sunderland, 2000

Bramble on the ramble…

8. Andriy Voronin (Liverpool) vs Toulouse, 2007

The Dud Ponytail comes good, if only very temporarily…

9. Djimi Traore (Seattle Sounders) vs Tigres, 2013

This was the first goal of Djimi’s professional career, aged 33…

10. Georgios Samaras (Man City) vs West Ham, 2006

Looks like a poisoned horse. Plays like a poisoned horse. Scores half-volleys like a titan…

11. Amr Zaki (Wigan) vs Liverpool, 2008

Looked like a world-beater for three months before if all turned to absolute tripe…

12. Anton Ferdinand (West Ham) vs Fulham, 2006

Screamer…

Any more suggestions Pies fans? We’re sure there must be hundreds more out there…
