Gerd Muller, the ultimate goal machine

Gerd Müller is arguably the most underrated player in football history. You hear all the time about Cruyff, Pele, Maradona, Best, Van Basten etc. but for some reason The Bomber never gets a look-in. Perhaps that’s because he’s German, or because he wasn’t a graceful player. (Effective, yes; graceful, hell no – check out the goal he scores on 1min 42 sec) Either way, it’s a minor scandal that he is overlooked by so many football fans.
Müller was the ultimate goal machine, as this YouTube vid proves. Has there ever been a deadlier player inside the opposition’s penalty area? For my money, there hasn’t – only Romario runs him close. Müller scored 68 goals in 62 appearances for Germany, a remarkable return. He was no less prolific at club level, racking up 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga appearances.
