Retro Football: Oliver Neuville Almost Scores Wonder Free-Kick In 2002 World Cup Final (Video)

By Ollie Irish

This isn’t the fox-in-the-box Neuville I remember. Brilliant effort though. A brilliant fingertip save too, by Marcos (I’m pretty sure it’s Marcos… yeah, I’ve checked – it’s Marcos).

And with the score at 0-0 when Neuville’s thunderbolt struck the post, it was not only a brilliant save but a crucial one. As we know, Brazil went on to win the 2002 World Cup final 2-0, with both goals scored by a revitalised Ronaldo.

I’d completely forgotten about this strike. Cracking hit. If it had gone in it probably would have been the greatest goal scored in a world cup final.

  3. S-League Player says:

That’s why he was called Saint Marcos.
